Astronaut to Visit UTB Campus for NASA Space Science Days
 
BROWNSVILLE, TX - JANUARY 9, 2013 - The South Texas Engineering, Mathematics and Science Program at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College will host the 10th annual NASA Space Science Days with a Community Night at 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 at the Science, Engineering and Technology Building Lecture Hall and activities specifically for area school students at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Science, Engineering and Technology Building.
 
The keynote speaker on Friday will be Joseph M. Acaba, a Mission Specialist for the STS-119 Discovery mission on March 15-28, 2009. Acaba and a team of six other astronauts delivered a pair of power generating solar array wings and a truss element to the International Space Station. He joined Russian cosmonauts for a 123-day mission from May to September 2012 to the International Space Station. The California native received a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1990 and a master’s degree in geology from the University of Arizona in 1992.

More than 600 fifth to eighth grade students from Brownsville, Harlingen, San Benito, La Feria, Santa Rosa, Progreso, San Perlita, Mission and Lasara will visit the university from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday for hands-on activities related to space and the solar system. Acaba will also speak to students.
