Astronaut to Visit UTB Campus for NASA Space Science

The keynote speaker on Friday will be Joseph M.
Acaba, a Mission Specialist for the STS-119 Discovery mission on March
15-28, 2009. Acaba and a team of six other astronauts delivered a pair of
power generating solar array wings and a truss element to the International
Space Station. He joined Russian cosmonauts for a 123-day mission from May to
September 2012 to the International Space Station. The California
native received a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of
California, Santa Barbara in 1990 and a master’s degree in geology from the
University of Arizona in 1992.

More than 600 fifth to eighth grade students from Brownsville,
Harlingen, San Benito, La Feria, Santa Rosa, Progreso, San Perlita, Mission and
Lasara will visit the university from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday for
hands-on activities related to space and the solar system. Acaba will also speak
to students.
