Accessibility Awareness Week Celebration Set for October 20-24, 2014
Everyone has abilities, and some have disabilities too. The purpose of UTB’s fourteenth annual Accessibility Awareness Week October 20-24 is both to celebrate abilities and to remind the campus community of our shared responsibility to create an inviting and accessible environment for everyone.
Leading off the week will be the Accessibility Awareness Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 22nd from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Main courtyard. Everyone is invited to actively "experience" dyslexia and visual impairments, make a sign language souvenir, learn some basic signs, feel "your name in Braille," and see and hear technology that helps blind students study and learn.
On Thursday October 23rd make plans to attend the "In Our Shoes" panel presentation from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. in Salon Cassia (Main 2.402). At this event, selected students with disabilities will share some of their life experiences and strategies for success. Panelists will include students with learning, visual, psychological, health and hearing impairments. Dr. Steve Chamberlain will serve as the moderator. Light refreshments will be served.
In a related event, the film Soul Surfer will be featured at Casa Bella Club House at 9:00 p.m. Thursday. Soul Surfer is the inspiring true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion again, through her sheer determination and unwavering faith. The showing is part of Thirsty Thursday and is sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement.
