Round 4: utb "a" Team loses to the University of Maryland Baltimore county and "b" team takes 4-0 victory

FORT WORTH, TEXAS - December 29, 2011 - UTB chess teams competed in Round 4 of the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championships this morning.

The UTB "A" Team lost to the undefeated University of Maryland Baltimore County 2.5-1.5. With only one win from GM Axel Bachmann, GM Timur Gareyev drew his game, and GM Mauricio Flores and IM Max Cornejo lost theirs.

The "A" Team consisted of-

#1 Board: GM Timur Gareyev

#2 Board: GM Mauricio Flores

#3 Board: GM Axel Bachmann

#4 Board: IM Max Cornejo

The "A" Team has 3 match points after 4 rounds.

The "B" Team swept the match against Miami Dade with a 4-0 victory. The team now also has 3 points after 4 rounds.

The "B" Team consisted of-

#1 Board: IM Alfonso Almeida

#2 Board: WGM Nadya Ortiz

#3 Board: WIM Luciana Morales

#4 Board: WIM-elect Daniela De la Parra

Round 5 will begin at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 29. The UTB "A" Team will be facing Columbia University, and the UTB "B" Team will play against the UT Dallas "B" team. Both opponents have also earned 3 points in 4 rounds.   

Daily updates about the UTB Chess Team at the 2011 Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championships in Fort Worth, Texas will be posted on this web page Dec. 27-30.

The top four finishers will qualify for the 2012 President’s Cup, known as the Final Four of College Chess to be held March 31 – April 1, 2012, in Herndon, Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C.
