UTB "A" Team Defeats Columbia University and "B" Team Loses to UT Dallas

FORT WORTH, TEXAS - December 29, 2011 - In the fifth round of the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championships, the UTB "A" team defeated Columbia University with a 4-0 victory.

The "A" Team consisted of-

#1 Board: GM Timur Gareyev

#2 Board: GM Mauricio Flores

#3 Board: GM Axel Bachmann

#4 Board: IM Max Cornejo

The UTB "A" Team improves to 4 points after 5 rounds.

With only one draw from WIM Luciana Morales, the UTB "B" Team lost to UT Dallas "B" Team 3.5 to .5.

The "B" team consisted of-

#1 Board: IM Alfonso Almeida

#2 Board: WGM Katerina Nemcova

#3 Board: WGM Nadya Ortiz

#4 Board: WIM Luciana Morales

The UTB "B" Team now has 3 points after 5 rounds.

The final round will begin at 9:00 a.m., Friday, Dec. 30.

Daily updates about the UTB Chess Team at the 2011 Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championships in Fort Worth, Texas will be posted on this web page Dec. 27-30.

The top four finishers will qualify for the 2012 President’s Cup, known as the Final Four of College Chess to be held March 31 – April 1, 2012, in Herndon, Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C.
