BROWNSVILLE – The University of Texas at Brownsville Ocelots men's soccer team held its 2014 Summer Camp Monday through Thursday at the UTB Soccer Field.

Overall, 23 boys and girls 4-16 years old attended camp and learned from Head Coach Dan Balaguero, Assistant Coach Omar Apodaca, community soccer coach Lalo Mata, and Ocelot player Ahmed Zaky.

"It went really well. We had a great group of kids, some very good players and they were a very attentive group." Balaguero said, "It was fun."

Campers went over drills concentrating on individual and team play. The camp was split up in groups. Campers 4-7 years old were on the north half of the field and the rest of the campers were on the south side of the field.

"Everyday we warmed up with some technical stuff and focused on a different aspect of the game daily." Balaguero said, "Monday was dribbling, Tuesday was passing and shooting, and Wednesday was heading and defending and then we had a tournament today to finish the camp with."

Balaguero added, "It's been great and I feel blessed to have been able to touch a lot of different youth in the area. Every year we had a good turnout and we have had positive feedback."

UTB Soccer Camps – A Great Success!

There were about 50 boys and girls that attended the camp, ages 4 all the way through 18. It was the best attended UTB Soccer Camp since 2007. This summer featured a variety of skill levels and both novice and advance players found plenty of opportunities to be challenged, have fun, compete and learn. There was a very enthusiastic staff that brought a wealth of experience, along with Coach Dan Balaguero and Coach Juan de Dios Garcia.

“The camps are always a great opportunity to spark – or reignite the passion and love for the game of soccer (futbol) and we enjoyed ourselves seeing smiles on everyone’s faces as they compete, learn, play.” – Coach Nikola Barjaktarevic

The coaches are excited to see the campers back at the games this fall, and have also designated one of UTB’s home games as “Camp Appreciation Game – Thursday, October 11th vs. Huston Tillotson University 5pm Men & 7pm Women”, where the returning campers will be able to get in the game for free, sit in the specially reserved section, be introduced at half time and get to meet the players.

“We always get excited to see the young, talented boys and girls at the camp and we certainly hope some of them will be future players for us here at UTB.” – Coach Nikola Barjaktarevic
