What is an Educational Specialist?

Academic counseling assists students, in a confidential setting, by helping them identify challenges and difficulties preventing their academic success and provides them with an action plan to learn strategies to overcome these challenges. 

What is the difference between Success Coaching and Academic Advisement?

Academic Counselors provide students the tools for achieving academic success and completing their academic goals.  Academic Advisors provide students with official degree plan, course recommendation, class registration as well as ensuring students comply with the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) university policy.

Who can receive academic counseling?

This service is available to all UTB/TSC students wishing to discover how best to study and increase the likelihood of successfully meeting their educational goals and objectives. 

How does Academic Counseling help students improve academic performance?

Students learn strategies to manage time and academic anxiety; learn how to take notes and  how to prepare and take tests, stay focused, set goals, stay motivated;  improve concentration, memory, and communication skills.  Additionally, students will have the opportunity to develop an academic success plan designed to help them complete their academic goals.

What tools are used in complementing academic counseling?

The Academic counselor utilizes:

·         The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) to help students discover their skills and strategies for learning.  (LASSI webpage-link) and ;

·         presents a series of study  skills workshops on  various topics including “time management”, “Making Wise Choices,” “Making Better Grades,” “Planning Ahead-How to Get Your Dream Schedule”  throughout the academic year including summer sessions.
