Phlebotomy Professional Certification Program Begins Spring Semester
The Medical Laboratory Technology Program in the Department of Allied Health at The University of Texas at Brownsville will begin a professional certification program for phlebotomy during spring semester to fill the need for qualified workers in the region.
Phlebotomists draw blood and use it for collection, transportation or analysis purposes for laboratories, hospitals, blood banks and private laboratories.
Fifteen slots are available for UTB students, said Consuelo Villalon, an assistant master technical instructor in the Department of Allied Health. Applicants do not need to have prerequisite courses to apply. Interested people need to complete an application, have two letters of recommendation, current CPR certification, undergo a criminal background check and have up to date immunizations.
Lectures will be conducted online by faculty in the Medical Laboratory Technology Program beginning Tuesday, Jan. 18, the start of the spring semester. Students and faculty members will have laboratory practicums 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until Friday, May 13. Students will also be required to do field work.
“We are going to place them in the hospitals to start the rotations,” said Villalon.
Students successfully completing the program will receive certification to work in Texas. Villalon said students can apply for national certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Villalon said the Medical Laboratory Technology Program plans to have phlebotomy certification each spring.
