Dr. Helmut Langerbein
Helmut Langerbein served twelve years as an officer in the German Air Force, including a position with NATO in Greece before coming to the United States in 1991. He studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara; California State University Northridge; and University of California, Santa Cruz, and received his Ph.D. in 2000. His special interests are in Nazi Germany, the Holocaust, genocide studies, and the social history of modern Europe.
Langerbein came to UTB in January 2004. He has been the chair of the History Department since July 2007 and teaches classes in United States, European, and world history. His publications include Hitler's Death Squads: The Logic of Mass Murder and several articles on 20th century European history.
To relax from his professional activities at UTB, Langerbein enjoys playing beach volleyball on South Padre Island.
