Suzanne Lalonde
Biography:
Suzanne LaLonde, Associate Professor of French, obtained a Ph.D. in French Language and Literature from the University of Maryland and completed part of her graduate work at the University of Strasbourg, France and at the University of Munich, Germany. Her research focuses on the intersection of literature, philosophy, and psychology, concentrating specifically on understanding literature from psychoanalytic and ecocritical perspectives.
For two years, she participated in the American Psychoanalytic Association (APA) mentorship program and was invited to present a research paper in 2009 at the Houston APA meeting entitled: “Mapping the Boundaries between Psychoanalysis, Feminism and Intimate Literature.” She has also published refereed papers on topics such as “Science and Women: Why Science (and not Biology) is biased against Women Learning Science”; “Le deuxième sexe dans l’ère post-féministe, voire anti-féministe”; and “Una perspectiva psicoanalítica de Nubosidad variable de Carmen Martín Gaite”, among others. More recently, she has branched off into ecocriticism and attempts to offer psycho-philosophical readings (based on trauma theory and psychoanalytic theory) of environmental degradation in Francophone Literature and notably in J.M.G. Le Clézio’s fiction.
Her teaching includes classes on French Language, Translation, Literature, and Culture (such as “Psychoanalytic Theory and French Literary Heroines”; “French Existentialism and the 20th Century French Novel”; “The French Enlightenment” and “French Nature Writing and the Nature of Writing”), as well as Spanish classes on the Intersection of French and Spanish Cultures and graduate Literary Theory. For two years, she directed UTB’s Study Abroad program and developed most notably an exchange program with the Sorbonne University, while since 2007, she has designed and coordinated the University’s Study Abroad Program in Paris, France.
