Flautarra Plays Chicago:
The UTB Flautarra Ensemble have been selected from among over 500 applicants to perform a 30 minute showcase concert at the 2014 National Flute Association Convention in Chicago in August. The National Flute Association Convention is an annual gathering of over 5000 flutists from across the United States and world. Invitations to perform at this prestigious event are coveted and it is a tremendous honor of international significance for UTB flute students to be selected to perform during the convention. This honor represents national recognition of the accomplishments of our students and their teacher. Performing at and attending the NFA Convention is an opportunity for our UTB students to experience the highest international standard of music making and pedagogy. This is an experience will provide a powerful impact on each student, helping to inspire and motivate them to continue to excel in their studies.
Flautarra, an innovative and unique combined ensemble featuring the joint forces of the UTB Flute Choir and UTB Guitar Orchestra, was created in 2012 by Co-Directors Dr. Cristina Ballatori, Assistant Professor of Flute, and Dr. Michael Quantz, Professor of Guitar. Since its inception in 2012, Flautarra has quickly built an impressive resumé with performances in the Rio Grande Valley, the Brownsville Flute & Clarinet Festival, the Brownsville Flute Festival, La Noche de la Guitarra, and the Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Festival. In February 2014, the group was competitively selected to play a Music Showcase Concert at the Texas Music Educators Association convention (the largest music teacher convention in the world) and in August 2013 they were invited to perform at the NFA Convention in Chicago, Illinois.
The unique musical possibilities that this ensemble offers has been the driving force behind its repertoire, which has been dedicated to Latin music of all styles, including classical. One of the composers featured in Flautarra’s recent repertoire, Christopher Caliendo, was immediately taken by the skill of the performers and has offered to compose new music especially for the group to premier at NFA in Chicago this August. In addition, Clarissa Salinas, senior music education major and principal flute for the Flautarra ensemble, has been selected by national audition as one of 20 flute students from across the U.S. to perform with the NFA’s 2014 Collegiate Flute Choir in Chicago this summer.
