Mission
The Mariachi Certificate, awarded by the University of Texas at Brownsville, advances the study of Mariachi music. It offers quality courses that will produce highly competent Mariachi educators. The Mariachi Certificate supports the university’s mission of public service and life-long service.

Certificate in Mariachi Education
The Certificate in Mariachi Education will offer a flexible, yet cohesive program of study in historical, theoretical, and instrumental techniques. These skills will be needed as part of a complete educational training of the music. The program will require 20 hours of coursework which can be completed in as little as two semesters.

Semester One

• Mariachi ensemble - choose one from: 1 Cr.Hr.
  
  MUEN 1139 - Instrumental Chamber ensemble or
  MUEN 1140 - Instrumental Chamber ensemble
• MUSI 3305 - History of Mariachi/Stylistic Trends 3 Cr.Hrs.
• MUSI 1105 - Special Topics in Mariachi Methods 3 Cr.Hrs.
  
  MUSI 1105.03 - Basics in Armonía/Guitarrón
  MUSI 1105.02 - Basics in Strings
  And choose from one of the following:
  
  MUSI 1105.01 - Basics in Mariachi Trumpet Techniques or
  MUSI 1105.04 - Basics in Mariachi Vocal Techniques
• MUAP x2xx - Applied Music in primary instrument 2 Cr.Hrs.
• MUSI 4211 - Computer Application in Music (Finale) 2 Cr.Hrs.

Semester Two

• Mariachi Ensemble – choose one from: 1 Cr.Hr.

  MUEN 1140 - Instrumental Chamber ensemble
• MUSI 2310 - Transcription and Transposition Techniques 3 Cr.Hrs.
  (Music Theory classes for majors or with Music Fundamentals for non-majors)
• MUSI 1105 - Special Topics in Mariachi Methods 3 Cr.Hrs.
  
  MUSI 1105.03 - Basics in Armonía/Guitarrón II
  MUSI 1105.02 - Basics in Strings II
