Voice

Overview

The voice area at UTB is a vibrant, growing program, currently consistring of over forty majors. The focus of our degree programs (in performance and music education) is to develop healthy, artistic singing. All voice students are required to present degree recital and complete rigorous coursework in Lyric Diction, Vocal Pedagogy, and Choral Conducting.

The voice area regularly sponsors masterclasses with nationally-acclaimed artists and teachers. Recent events include Ann Baltz of OperaWorks  and Georgine Resick, international soprano and Professor at the University of Notre Dame.

Careers in Voice

Earning a Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in voice prepares students for a variety of education and performance-based careers. UTB voice program graduates have pursued careers as both music educators and performers throughout Texas, Mexico and the United States; alumni teach elementary music as well as middle school and high school choir.

Alumni have also gone on to pursue graduate degrees at the University of Houston - Moores School of Music, Texas State at San Marcos, and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Auditions and Scholarships

Students interested in auditioning for the Voice Program at UTB should prepare two pieces: one in English, and one in either Italian, German, or French. All students will also be asked to sight-sing at the audition. For more information regarding audition dates and policies, please contact Dr. Daniel Hunter-Holly. Scholarships are available for select students; in order to be considered for a scholarship, students must audition on one of the Scholarship Audition dates.

Vocal Ensembles

All voice students enrolled in applied music lessons must be in two ensembles each semester. Voice students have the opportunity to participate in several different ensembles at UTB, including the Master Chorale and the Bravo Opera Company.

National Association of Teachers of Singing

Students and faculty at UTB actively participate in the National Association of Teachers of Singing organization. NATS offers opportunities such as regional competitions, masterclasses, clinics, and conferences. UTB is part of the South Texas Chapter of NATS.

In recent years, many students from UTB have placed as semi-finalists, finalists, and winners at both the South Texas Chapter and Texoma Regional NATS competitions.
