Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Brownsville!

The College of Liberal Arts is the largest and most diverse college of the university. It is comprised of nine academic departments Behavioral Sciences, Communication, Criminal Justice, English, Government, History, Modern Languages, Music, and Visual Arts and offers nearly 40 undergraduate programs of study and a dozen graduate degrees. The 130 dedicated faculty members of the College of Liberal Arts comprise a vibrant community of teachers and scholars who share with their students their passion and knowledge of the arts, literature and history, and well as human and behavioral cultures. The College also supports specialized and innovative programs in Architecture and Forensic Investigation as well as Spanish Translation and Interpreting Studies.

Apart from instructing students in the content knowledge and methodologies of these disciplines, the College of Liberal Arts serves the university by providing much of the coursework of the general studies curriculum. Our academic programs and courses promote critical reasoning abilities, effective written and spoken communication skills, and innovative and creative thinking capabilities - all preparing students for a broad variety of careers. These skills and abilities make College of Liberal Arts graduates in high demand in the job market. Indeed, a 2009 survey for the Association of American Colleges and Universities found that more than three-quarters of the nation’s employers recommend that college-bound students pursue a “liberal education.” It is hardly surprising, then, that a growing number of corporations, including some in highly technical fields, are headed by people with liberal arts degrees (Chronicle of Higher Education, Feb. 28th 2010).

Additionally, College of Liberal Arts faculty members are committed to fostering lifelong learning beyond the classroom, encouraging civic discourse and engagement, and imparting to students the knowledge and skills that will enable them to participate in the global community.

I welcome you to learn more about the programs, events, and people of the College of Liberal Arts and to explore the opportunities our college and university can offer you.

Warmest regards,

Javier A. Martinez, Ph.D.
