The Center for Educational Development and Innovation has been awarded $218,400 to implement a research-based professional development training model

The Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Miguel Angel Escotet received notification that the Center for Educational Development and Innovation and its Teacher Quality Grants Program (TQGP) has been recommenced for a second year of funding for a total of 2-years amount of $218,400 by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The purpose of the processed project titled, "Exploring Water Quality through Problem Based Learning," is to implement a research-based professional development training to 20 middle school science teachers from the Brownsville ISD, Harlingen CISD, IDEA Public Schools, Los Fresnos CISD, Mercedes ISD, Point Isabel ISD, Progresso ISD, and San Benito CISD.

Through this project teachers from the eight school districts partners will participate in exploring classroom and field activities extended by interactive online activities to:

a) increase science teacher's content knowledge in earth and space sciences, specifically the influences of geogolic forces on wateshed and landforms; 
b) increase science teacher's pedagogical knowledge to implement the project-based instructiona practices; and 
c) increase science teacher's content knowledge of environmental science, specifically dynamic relationships of dams, rivers, and other watershed features on Texas municipalities and industry. Dr. Gene Paull, Professor/ Chair in the College of Science, Mathematics, and Technology, Chemistry and Environment Department at The University of Texas at Brownsville will be the Content Area Higher Education Faculty.
