Dr. Abrego currently serves as an associate professor in the Educational Leadership Program at UTB. Prior to coming to UTB in 2001 she served in a variety of leadership positions including that of campus principal, Regional Educational Specialist and State Program Director at the Texas Education Agency for Safe and Drug Free Schools and HIV and other Communicable Diseases.  She holds Texas administrative licenses in Mid Management, Supervision and the Superintendency.

Dr. Abrego’s doctoral work was done at the University of Texas at Austin in Educational Administration as part of the Cooperative Superintendency Program.  She holds two Master’s Degrees – a Curriculum and Instruction Master’s degree from Michigan State University and one in Educational Administration from Texas A & M Corpus Christi.

Dr. Abrego presents at a variety of conferences including the American Educational Research Association, National Council of Professors of Educational Administration, Association of Supervision, Curriculum and Development and Association of Teacher Educators.

She has published numerous articles in a variety of journals including School Community Journal, Academic Exchange Quarterly, The Journal of Border Educational Research, Action in Teacher Education and Classroom Leadership.  Additionally, she has book chapters and monograph articles.

She is a member of Quality Leaders for Quality Schools, a national taskforce of the Association of Teacher Educators.

She holds an appointment to the University of Texas at Brownsville’s Institutional Review Board and the University Research Council.

Area of Specialty and Responsibility:

Dr. Abrego is interested in researching the areas of teacher and principal preparation programs and Latino parental involvement in schools.  Her current area of research includes examining principals and their attitudes and actions towards response to intervention as well as exploring principals and how they define the role of literacy coaches.
