We have been invited to join the faculty at UTPA at their campus for a joint faculty meeting on September 5, 2014 from 11:00am to 4:00pm at the Boderlands room at UTPA. Directions to the campus and the room will be provided before that day.  At this very important joint faculty we will spend time sharing enrollment numbers, faculty assignments, and committee reports. Please RSVP to Janey.Pizana@utb.edu so that Dr. Huerta can plan for lunch/refreshments. Please make every effort to attend. If you are unable to attend, please let me know as soon as possible. The Graduate Nursing Student Academy (GNSA) is pleased to announce a CALL FOR APPLICATIONS for the GNSA Policy Committee.
This select group of graduate students will receive support to become highly-skilled advocates and learn about the essential tools for effective advocacy at the local, state, and national levels. Additionally, members of the GNSA Policy Committee will offer insight to AACN on policy issues of importance to graduate nursing students. 
Through participation in this committee, members will have an opportunity to serve in a leadership role, enhance their professional development, and acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to be effective policy and advocacy leaders for nursing. The GNSA Policy Committee will consist of four GNSA members who will serve no more than two, one-year terms. Deadline - 8/22/14

Luis V. Colom, M.D., Ph.D., was Vice President of the Division of Research and Dean of the College of Nursing and Dean of the College of Biomedical Sciences and Health Professions. He lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, March 27, 2014. His department’s success created the need for even more research labs; in 2009 he wrote the federal grant to seek additional funding for what eventually became Biomedical Sciences and Health Professions Building II. This building will now bear his name.​

College of Nursing Hosts Bachelor of Science in Nursing Orientation for the first class of traditional BSN students.
The orientation will highlight textbook purchases, nursing and rehabilitation clinical opportunities, student safety, academic advising, library resources and other topics.
Students interested in the four-year degree took the pre-nursing courses Pathophysiology, Fundamentals of Nursing and Pharmacotherapeutics during the 2013-14 academic year at the College of Nursing. Upon completion of the courses, students applied to be a member of the first 50-student cohort to take classes for the bachelor’s degree in nursing. The Texas Board of Nursing approved the university’s new degree in July 2012.

NEW YORK, June 17, 2014 – The Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare (Jonas Center), Khan Academy, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) are pleased to announce that 55 new healthcare lessons in 9 topic areas are now available online to supplement the learning of healthcare students, practitioners, and patients worldwide. ...The first wave of this innovative content is now available for free on the Khan Academy website. 
This new resource will be of particular interest to nursing students preparing for the national licensing exam – the NCLEX-RN® – since 158 sample exam questions are now included among the material posted.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing for Registered Nurses (RN-BSN) program stands out as one of the Universities in Texas making significant strides to meet the IOM recommendation for 80% of nurses to obtain the BSN by 2020! 
UTB has significantly increased their RN-BSN enrollments and their RN-BSN graduations over the past 2 years!!
2013 Texas Nursing Workforce data show:
47.8% of Texas Nurses hold a ADN or Diploma
52.2% of Texas Nurses hold a BSN or higher
