Media Quick Tips

From the Office of News and Information:

1. Be prepared. Anticipate what the reporter may ask you. Consider all angles.
2. Prepare answers in advance and keep answers short and to the point.
3. Be honest. Never lie.
4. If you don't want something repeated, don't say it.
5. Take two deep breaths and smile. Be expressive when you speak. By putting your body and face behind your words, you’ll appear more committed to your message.
6. Listen carefully to the reporter. Think about your answer. Respond. Don't react.
7. Keep your cool. If you're getting hot under the collar, keep it there. Even if the reporter is rude or hostile, you must appear friendly and cordial.
8. Keep it simple. Stay away from scientific jargon.
9. Keep to your area of expertise. Don't answer a question if you don't know the answer.
10. If somebody else can answer the question, let the reporter know.
