Located at the southernmost tip of the Rio Grande Valley, 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and one block from the U.S.-Mexico border. The University of Texas at Brownsville is the newest of 15 institutions operated by the University of Texas System. Established in 1991, UTB has formed a unique partnership with Texas Southmost College, a comprehensive community college. The partnership provides continuity in curriculum, efficient use of resources and high-quality instructional programs at the associate, baccalaureate and masters level, UTB/TSC serves 17,000 students drawn from the rich bilingual and bicultural community. Together with the Mexican metropolitan areas along the U.S.-Mexico border, Brownsville and Matamoros form a hub of populations, commerce, industry and culture which will play a major role in the impending development of the Texas-Mexico border area. UTB/TSC expects to grow rapidly during the coming decade to meet the needs of its dynamic region. Brownsville, home of UTB/TSC, is located in beautiful sub-tropical Southmost Texas. Mexico is only minutes away and offers numerous eating, shopping and cultural adventures. South Padre Island one of the world's most beautiful beaches offers swimming, beach combing, sport fishing, and a world class birding center. A dynamic institution located in a beautiful and culturally rich environment, UTB/TSC stands ready to meet the challenges and promises of tomorrow.
