In order to maintain your J-1 status, you should:

-
Have a valid I-94 card, which indicates you have been admitted “J-1” for “D/S” (Duration of Status).
-
Have a valid DS 2019 form, which accurately reflects your title, department and funding source.
-
Maintain proper insurance coverage for you and all your J-2 dependents as mandated by USDS.
-
Do not accept unauthorized employment.
-
Keep your address and phone numbers up to date directly with the IFSO.
-
Make arrangements to process your extension of stay in a timely manner up to 6 months before your current DS 2019 expires.
-
Contact the IFSO as soon as you have travel plans. You will need a properly endorsed DS 2019, and a support letter if you need to apply for a new visa.
-
Report to the IFSO upon return to the U.S. with your DS 2019, I-94 card, passport, and visa.
