  1. INTERNATIONAL SERVICES OFFICE:  The office is located on the Cortez Building - Suite 129.  Office hours are Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Our phone number is (956) 882-7690. Our fax number is (956) 882-7476.  Please contact us if we can help with questions about living in Brownsville, immigration, visas, and traveling outside of the U.S.

  2. BENEFITS OFFICE:  All UTB personnel and visitors are required to present proof of medical health insurance. If you are not covered by the University Health Insurance Plan, you will be required to purchase your own health insurance through the Student Health Services Office.  Their telephone number is (956) 882-8951. Located in Cavalry Hall.

  3. CASHIER: There is an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) located at the University’s Bookstore. 

  4. PAYROLL:  The Payroll office is located at Tandy Building Room 110.  If you have questions about your U.S. tax responsibility during your stay at UTB, please contact the Payroll office for more information.

  5. HUMAN RESOURCES:  All new employees, students, and visitors must check-in with UTB Human Resources, Cortez Building - Suite 129.  Human Resources Employment Division will issue to you a UTB photo identification card (“ID”) and give you information about UTB orientation program.

  6. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER:  All University employees and students must have a social security number in order to receive pay.

  7. SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE:  The Social Security Office in Brownsville Downtown is located at 405 E. Levee Street. A map and directions are available in ISO. The Social Security office hours are 8:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.  The telephone number is (956) 574-7417.  You will need to take your passport, birth certificate, I-94 Form, and DS 2019 Form (J-1 visa), or I-797 (H-1 visa) and at least five dollars in cash for possible parking charges at certain locations.

  8. FEDERAL INCOME TAX:  All money earned in the United States is taxable income unless the U.S. has a “tax treaty” (agreement) with your home country.  U.S. income tax laws are very complicated, and the International Services Office is not qualified to give advice regarding tax status, filing or completing income tax forms, etc.   For more information, contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at 1-800-829-3676.  The IRS will send you, free of charge, Publications 519 and 901 that explain the tax responsibilities of international visitors.  If you are a non-resident for tax purposes, you must file the 1040NR prior to April 15 of each year regardless of whether you had U.S. source income or not.  Keep copies of your completed income tax forms for your records.  These copies may be required when you depart the U.S. permanently. 

  9. YOUR BROWNSVILLE ADDRESS:  Please make sure that the International Office has your Brownsville address and telephone number AT ALL TIMES.  If you move, please call us with your new address immediately.
