Stay informed and keep an eye on Tropical Storm Dolly
July 21, 2008 - 6:04 p.m.
Tropical Storm Dolly is now in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and a hurricane watch has been issued for Northern Mexico and the lower Texas coast to Port O’Connor.
Dolly is moving west-northwest at 18 mph and is projected to reach hurricane status on Tuesday, July 22. Landfall is estimated around 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 23 with the possibility of reaching Category 2 status.
The university’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) met at 4:30 p.m., Monday July 21 and will meet again at 8 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, at which time a decision will be made when classes and the campus will close.
Employees should continue to prepare their areas as per their office, department and university hurricane plan.
Physical Plant employees are readying sandbags and plywood for hurricane preparations and will start deliveries and boarding at 6 a.m., Tuesday, with a staging area in the parking lot in front of Gorgas Hall.
At the Village at Fort Brown arrangements are in place to move 20 students and staff members to the Upper Valley. Students in the UTB/TSC Upward Bound Program from the Rio Hondo School District will be sent home Tuesday.
You can never predict what a tropical storm will do so it is important to continue to listen to weather reports and watch for additional updates from the UTB/TSC Hurricane Plan/Alert Page (http://www.utb.edu/ba/hurricane).
The following events are also rescheduled:
- Kids College and the Filmmaking Camp 2008 at the International Technology, Education and Commerce Campus will operate Tuesday and will close when the university shuts down. For more information call (956) 882-4192.
- Scorpiontation scheduled for Wednesday, July 23 and Thursday, July 22, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 30 and Thursday, July 31.
- The High School Equivalency Program graduation ceremony has been postponed until Friday, August 1.
- The Testing Office has canceled COMPASS, GRE and Teacher testing for the afternoon of Tuesday, July 22, and all day Wednesday, July 23, Thursday, July 24 and Friday, July 25. Please contact the office at 882-8875 for further information.
