The exemption covers the student's tuition only--fees are not covered.
Application Process
Contact the Veterans Affairs Office, located in Tandy 206. Students must be able to provide proof of meeting the program’s eligibility requirements, as outlined above.
Child must provide proof (ex- military orders, pay records from service member’s unit to which he/she is assigned, etc.) of service member’s deployment from the Department of Defense for the relevant semester or academic term. Child must compete an application for exemption
Documentation Options suggested by the Texas Veterans Commission:
Source documents for deployment are military orders. These orders will originate/or be processed at the unit to which the military member is assigned. The military member is the best source for the deployment documents. The next best source would be the unit to which the person was assigned, which should have documentation of which members were deployed, when and how long they were deployed. Above the unit level, documentation of individual names on deployment orders becomes very difficult to determine.
Another avenue for tracking where and when a military member was deployed is pay records. Combat pay and other hazardous duty pay are pretty good indicators that a military member served in a combat zone. The best source of these records is the military member him/herself. Dependents or former dependents might have difficulty obtaining records due to Privacy Act requirements.
Finally, the National Personnel Records Center at St. Louis ((314) 801-0800) might be able to provide military records for a student. This is the national repository for military records for all who have served in the military. The NPRC address follows:
