Private Scholarships are those not directly affiliated with UTB and TSC. These scholarships are sponsored, administered and awarded by a wide variety of private agencies, organizations or individual donors. The scholarship funds are sent to UTB and TSC on the recipient's behalf. Private scholarships are available throughout the year.
Below are listings of private scholarships available to high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students. These scholarships are based on varying criteria and application processes. Please visit the programs' websites for additional information. Private organizations usually provide some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and contact information to assist you. Be aware that some private organizations may offer more than one scholarship.
Students awarded a scholarship from a private donor may request the funds and cover letter be sent to:
The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College
Financial Aid Office, Tandy Hall, Room 206
Attention: Scholarship Coordinator
80 Fort Brown
Brownsville , TX 78520
Note: Scholarship checks should be made payable to The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
The cover letter should include the following
- Student's name
- Social Security number or UTB and TSC ID number
- Semester or academic year that the scholarship covers
- Donor contact information
Scholarship Checks Sent Directly to the Student
Students need to notify the Financial Aid Office of any private scholarships made payable to them.
Co-payable Scholarship Checks
Students must endorse scholarship checks made payable to the student or co-payable to the University and the student before disbursement. For prompt service, it is recommended that checks be made payable only to UTB and TSC on the student's behalf.
Disbursement of Scholarship Funds
Scholarship funds will be credited to the student's university account at the Accounting and Finance Office and applied towards any institutional charges. Any excess funds will be refunded to the student for other educational expenses. If the scholarship donor does not specify how to disburse scholarship funds, the Financial Aid Office will divide the awards evenly between the fall and spring semesters.
Some scholarship donors require that students provide verification of enrollment before funds can be forwarded to the institution. Students must sign a verification of enrollment release form at the Registrar's Office, Tandy Hall, Room 105.
