BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – AUGUST 16, 2008 – Staff and resident advisors at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College’s Village at Fort Brown residential housing welcomed new and returning students during Move In Day on Saturday, Aug. 16.

The Village will have 330 students for the fall semester, which begins Wednesday, Aug. 20, with 100 percent occupancy.

“We are excited to get everybody here,” Director of Residential Life and Student Union Douglas Stoves said. “There is a lot of anxiety to make sure everything is right.”

Abraham Kang, 19, a freshman business administration - accounting major from Seoul, South Korea, was one of the first students to move into his room. He proudly showed off the items he said he could not live without in his dorm room: his coffee pot, laptop computer and printer.

“Here it’s comfortable,” Kang said about his first floor room. “I can use the swimming pool and gym.”

Residential advisors were painting signs, checking student housing paperwork and moving furniture as late as Friday afternoon.

Stoves said some students even visited asking for housing on Friday. About 30 students are on a waiting list for rooms.

“That’s the encouraging thing for me – I’m proud of the fact we have a place people want to be,” Stoves said.

Alma Garza, 20, a junior nursing major from Rio Hondo, is starting her second year as a resident advisor. She said she enjoys the job because she gets to meet people from different locales.

Besides students from Texas cities such as Brownsville, San Benito, Harlingen, Los Fresnos and McAllen, there are also students representing Canada, Great Britain, Mexico, Ireland and other nations.

Each room has beds, a microwave, small refrigerator, a chest of drawers, wireless Internet and a television with cable. Most rooms have two students, though suites have three to five students each.
