A look back at UTB/TSC’s first Homecoming
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – OCTOBER 26, 2009 – The last time Rhonda Spurlock Dahlke visited The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College was with Leadership Texas in 2005.
She was pleasantly surprised at what she saw at the university’s first Homecoming held Monday, Oct. 12 to Sunday, Oct. 18. She attended the weekend’s Coffee with the President, Student Leaders Reception and class reunions.
“UTB/TSC has evolved into a first rate campus,” said Dahlke, a 1981 Texas Southmost College graduate and director of the Women’s Leadership Council for the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. “It was very exciting to see the beautiful buildings all designed to honor and reflect our unique culture. I was amazed at the growth and pride everyone has, especially the joy and commitment of the faculty and staff.”
Homecoming was well received by graduates and the campus community, Alumni Relations Director Marisa Campirano said. Suggestions made about this year’s activities will be applied to making Homecoming 2010 even more successful.
“This definitely created a launching pad for the future,” Campirano said. “We encourage alumni to contact the Alumni Relations Office so we can include them in next year’s event.”
Blue-blazer-clad Scorpion ambassadors worked at all the week’s events. These students volunteer in the Student Affairs Division and serve as hosts at campus events and tours.
“Homecoming is just another sign of showing the community what a hidden gem this campus really is,” said Director of Student Life Sergio Martinez. “It’s taking it to the next level and shows our community, our students, staff and faculty that UTB/TSC is a wonderful institution, and as an alumnus, I was very proud and honored to be part of the activities.”
Some of the most popular events were the Colleges and Schools Reception in Salon Cassia at the Education and Business Complex and the Late Night Ghost and Historic Walking Tour.
Some Homecoming events were geared toward the campus community.
User Support Services won the Homecoming Door Decoration Contest. The 2nd place winner was the Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies and the 3rd place finisher was the Financial Aid Office.
About 1,250 students voted online for the Homecoming Court. They were introduced between the men’s and women’s soccer games on Saturday, Oct. 17. The homecoming king was Chris Scott and the homecoming queen was Alexis Alfaro.
