Remembering Gustavo Barreda
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS –MARCH 8, 2013 - The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College is sad to announce the loss of a retired staff member.
Gustavo Barreda, a former Director of Administrative Computing and Enterprise Resource Planning, died earlier this week. He worked on this campus for 29 years, and is remembered fondly by current and many former members of the campus community.
“He was never one to make you call him ‘Mr. Barrera’ and he always treated his and other university staff, and individuals outside of work with great respect,” said Abel De La Garza, Assistant Director of Enterprise Applications Services located in Tandy Hall. “For every Bosses’ Day that I can remember, he would ask to be taken to Valley International Country Club and always on a Thursday. It was a given, never did we question his choice and all his staff participated in the luncheon. He was always thoughtful when it came to his own staff’s birthdays, weddings and other celebrations. He was always the first one to donate for the birthday fund and enjoyed the cake with the fruit salad.”
Gustavo was hired on June 14, 1982 as a Programmer Analyst III for Texas Southmost College. Within a year he was promoted to Director. He retired on June 17, 2011 as Director of Administrative Computing and Enterprise Resource Planning.
Gustavo is a graduate of Brownsville High School.
