UTB Students Dream Big for UTRGV

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – FEBRUARY 6, 2014 Students at The University of Texas at Brownsville shared their dreams for the new UTRGV at the Dream Big rally on Wednesday, Feb. 5 in the courtyard at Main.

Students first gathered at the Student Union Veranda where they made signs sharing their dreams for the new university. From the Student Union, the group marched to the courtyard of Main led by the beat of the UTB Drumline, along with the Cheer Squad and Ozzie, the school mascot.

The rally was organized by the Division of  Student Affairs to foster student engagement and spirit. Heather Olague, Director of Leadership Programs, welcomed students and encouraged them to write their dreams on the “What is your Dream?” wall, a large whiteboard set up in the courtyard.

“I am excited for the future,” said Stephanie Mendez, Student Government Association President from the podium. “I dream of our university becoming internationally recognized in all areas of study and research. I dream of a university where students are proud to attend, wear our colors and have amazing campus traditions. I dream of a university where students experience study abroad and internship opportunities. I dream of a university where everyone feels welcomed and at home. I dream that students and alumni from UTRGV inspire future generations to earn a post-secondary education.”

The UTB Cheer Squad made its debut appearance to the campus with a spirited cheer routine that involved backflips and a pyramid.

Sophomore kinesiology major Nathalie Serrano, a 2012 graduate from Hanna High School and co-captain of the new Cheer Squad, said she and the 16-member team were excited to finally show off their hard work to fellow students, faculty and staff. Formed at the beginning of the fall 2013 semester, the team has been diligently practicing every morning at 6 a.m., Serrano said.

“This is a lot of work and a big time commitment, but we are enjoying this so much, and we think it is so important to build school spirit,” Serrano said. “We want the team to grow; tryouts are coming up this Friday and Saturday, with finals on Sunday, and we encourage anyone who is interested to come and try out.”

Another new spirit group, the UTB Feline Dancers, made its debut at the rally. The Feline Dancers are welcoming both male and female dancers who would like to try out for their team.

Freshman speech pathology major and the only female drummer in the Drumline, Jody Montalvo was nervous and enthusiastic about playing at the rally.

“This is a really awesome event – the Drumline really helps get everyone into the spirit,” said the Harlingen High School graduate.

To encourage students to continue posting their dreams on social media, the rally organizers handed out burnt orange wrist bands with the hashtag #utrgvdreamBig.

UTRGV, which will have a medical school, was created out of The University of Texas at Brownsville and The University of Texas-Pan American. The inaugural class of students to enroll will be in August of 2015. Information about the new university can be found at Project South Texas.
