BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – MARCH 30, 2012 –A total of 2,600 participated in first-round voting for the new, official mascot for The University of Texas at Brownsville.
Preliminary voting took place from Tuesday, March 27 through Thursday, March 29 in conjunction with the Student Government Association elections.
Of the 2,600 votes cast those dates, which were tallied by the Mascot Search Committee via the My UTB Blackboard portal, 1,994 of those votes belonged to students and 606 belonged to faculty and staff.
The Mascot Search Committee and Executive Council will now review the results. The list of mascots will be further narrowed down into a list of mascot finalists to be announced the week of April 8 in preparation for the final round of voting.
The final round of voting will begin on Monday, April 23 through Wednesday, April 25 on Blackboard in conjunction with the elections for the Bougainvillea Ball king and queen. The number of finalists is to be determined by the Mascot Search Committee depending on the number of votes received for each mascot candidate.

A webpage on the university’s website has given the university community the opportunity to preview a list of the 32 potential mascots that were voted on. Suggestions for mascots included the ocelots, the cavalry, the hurricanes, vaqueros, rattle snakes and many more with accompanying visuals. Students are encouraged to weigh in on their favorite mascot through the university’s social media sites at www.facebook.com/UTB.TX or on Twitter @UTBrownsville with the hashtag #UTBmascot.
The Mascot Search Committee was created to help choose a new icon representing UTB as it becomes an autonomous institution and is comprised of representatives from several UTB departments and includes members of the Division of Student Affairs, the Office of Student Life, staff and alumni.
The new mascot is scheduled to be revealed before the fall semester.
