Q:

Why were some staff in Student Affairs Division promoted to higher administrative positions? This did not sit too well with the rest of the staff, especially those who received RIF letters.

A:
With rightsizing taking place across the university, each unit developed a plan to manage their workload through a smaller number of staff. In the case of Student Affairs, all three Associate VP positions were eliminated, and existing directors from throughout the unit have collectively taken on more responsibility to ensure our students continue to benefit from a wide array of services, even though the revenue from student fees will be greatly reduced following the separation of the Partnership.

How do I log into TSC online; is login info the same as UTB Online? If not, how can I set mine up?

A:
All current UTB/TSC students will need new credentials to log into TSC online. TSC has sent an email to students with their new credentials so they can register online. Students can also visit TSC's Arnulfo L. Oliveira Student Services Center to obtain their credentials.

Q:

Does the employee have the option to choose between staying in the department, working on a project or going to EDC? At one of the information sessions, Rosemary Martinez indicated that it was up to the supervisor.

A:
It is the administration’s most sincere objective to help employees affected by the RIF secure new employment while still providing uninterrupted services to students. Supervisors will best determine how to balance the needs of serving students and of assisting employees in transition.

Q:

I'm teaching Summer I and my office is in South. I'm supposed to vacate by May 31, causing great difficulty. What would happen if I don't pack up my stuff or turn in my keys?

A:
Moving over the summer will pose a great many challenges, as outlined in the May 3rd message sent to faculty. It is important that all the prep work be completed in advance to be able to move across campus and allow time for TSC employees to move in and prepare for the fall semester. Administrative support, including assistance in reserving alternative meeting space, will be offered through the Deans’ Offices to assist faculty teaching summer courses. More information can be found in the FAQ regarding faculty moving procedures. Finally, items remaining in offices that are not boxed and properly labeled after May 31st will be removed for surplus or disposal.

Q:

Once the merger occurs, will the remaining UTB staff be let go?

A:
Momentum has been gained on all fronts to expand the UT Brownsville campus. On May 9th, the UT Board of Regents approved expanding the UT Brownsville campus as a compact urban campus, which includes accepting the gift of land by The City of Brownsville for campus expansion. At commencement ceremonies last Friday, Chancellor Cigarroa spoke about his plans to build upon the legacy of UTB to create a new, global university and a South Texas medical school to secure the futures of generations to come. At the same time, the Texas Legislature is giving serious consideration to approving funds for new construction on the UT Brownsville campus. Enrollment for the fall semester at UTB is ongoing through August 2nd, with 5,300 returning students already registered.

Faculty and staff are vital in order to continue to grow the Brownsville campus. No additional layoffs are planned.

Q:

We were told that having past disputes with supervisors/directors would not be a factor for the RIF, however, this is what is happening.

A:
The procedures for the RIF were carefully designed to be as objective as possible, and decisions were reviewed at the highest levels including the Office of Human Resources, the Provost, the President and UT System Office of General Council. In addition, affected employees were given the opportunity to appeal the decisions.

Q:

As of today, I just need my exit exam in August to get my associate degree in CIS. Will I still graduate from UTB or will I have to graduate from TSC?

A:
Associate degrees and certificates are offered at the community college level. Diplomas and transcripts for these credentials will be issued under the UTB/TSC partnership until TSC receives seperate accreditation.

5/9/2013 3:23 PM

Q:

IF I GET SUSPENDED FROM UTB, CAN I REGISTER FOR TSC?

A:
Transfer students on disciplinary suspension must meet with TSC’s Associate Vice President of Student Services to be cleared for enrollment prior to registering. Students on academic suspension are eligible to enroll, however, if they are on financial aid suspension at another institution, that will carry over to TSC. Students on financial aid suspension must pay for their own courses until they improve their GPA and again qualify for financial aid.

Registration for TSC courses for Fall 2013 has not begun yet, so if you have already registered for Fall 2013 courses, they are UTB courses and will appear on your UTB transcript. For more assistance with registration, students may visit with an advisor or the Registrar's Office, and may submit questions to the Registration Help website at http://www.utb.edu/em/UTB-GET-HELP.aspx

Q:

RIF'd faculty will get their last paychecks on June 1 thus ending thier benefits. Yet lecturers are paid through September 1 which indicates they get benefits three months longer yet both groups are out at the end of the semester. Is this correct?

A:
Compensation and benefits end on May 31, 2013 for RIF’d tenure and tenure-track faculty per the separation agreement.  As we have done in previous years, Lecturers’ compensation and benefits are spread over a 12 month period.  For academic year 2013-2014, all Lecturer positions will be re-advertised to allow RIF’ed tenure and tenure-track faculty the opportunity to apply for those positions. Priority for these positions will be given for equally qualified RIF’d tenure and tenure-track faculty.

Q:

It was announced that we would know the location of the new campus in February. That month has come and gone, when will we learn where the new campus will be located?

A:
The UT System and Texas Southmost College are still engaged in property negotiations. At the same time, the UT System Board of Regents is analyzing potential sites for the new UTB campus. We believe we may know more in the next couple of months.

4/18/2013 9:11 AM

Q:

If UTB's enrollment for 2013-2014 falls lower than expected, will another lay off occur before the merger?

A:
No further layoffs are planned at this time. However, our revenues are dependent on summer and fall enrollment numbers. We we must continue to focus on recruiting a new freshmen class to UTB and retaining current UTB sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students in order to insure a healthy enrollment. Early signs are positive, and we remain confident that, over the next few years, UT Brownsville will once again grow annually to keep pace with the emergent population of the Rio Grande Valley.
