BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – February 1, 2010 – “A Night of Strings,” an inaugural year event at The Arts Center, will take place at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 15.
The concert will benefit student scholarships and will include performances by Dr. Francisco Cigarroa, chancellor of The University of Texas System, UTB/TSC students and faculty, and area youth musicians.
“I am honored to take part in an event that promotes a heightened awareness of the arts – particularly when it involves and benefits our students,” said Chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D. “I’m confident the new Arts Center will further enliven UTB/TSC’s campus and will be a gem for generations of students, faculty and staff – as well as the entire community of Brownsville – to enjoy.”
The program for the evening features guitar, violin and cello performances by a range of performers, and all proceeds will benefit student scholarships.
“Scholarships are a critical component of financing higher education today, in all fields,” said Fine Arts Department Chair Sue Zanne Urbis, Ph.D. “We have many students who are pursuing a career in music, and we also have many taking music classes and participating in ensembles who are not music majors. They are studying English and physics and all number of subjects, yet playing their instrument or participating in a vocal group is a critical part of who they are.”
“A Night of Strings” is the first scheduled performance of the upcoming year-long inauguration of The Arts Center.
Located on the Fort Brown Resaca, adjacent to the Jacob Brown Memorial Auditorium, the state-of-the-art Arts Center is designed to allow the audience to experience performances unlike anywhere else in South Texas. With its technologically advanced acoustics, lighting and performance space, The Arts Center raises the bar for the fine arts in South Texas.
Tickets for the evening’s performance are available for $50. They may be purchased by Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.
