UTB/TSC to Host the President’s Cup, the Final Four of Chess, April 9-11
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – MARCH 31, 2010 – The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College will host for the first time the President’s Cup, the Final Four of College Chess, from Friday, April 9 to Sunday, April 11.
Teams from UTB/TSC, Texas Tech University, The University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County will compete at the Education and Business Complex in Salon Cassia.
The teams finished in the top four at the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship hosted by UTB/TSC in December on South Padre Island.
“It’s going to be a challenging event because of the strength of the individual teams,” said Timur Gareyev, a junior on the UTB/TSC Chess Team.
Joining Gareyev to compete at the championship will be team members Axel Bachmann, Max Cornejo and Mauricio Flores. Team alternates will be Nadya Ortiz and Luciana Morales.
“This is the strongest team UTB/TSC has ever had,” said Gareyev. “It’s important for us to maximize our potential.”
An opening dinner for invited guests, teams and coaches is scheduled for 7 p.m., Friday, April 9. Matches will be played at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 10 and a third round is set for 9 a.m. Sunday, April 11. If needed, a tie breaking match will be played at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 11.
The awards ceremony will take place 30 minutes before the final match is completed or at 2:30 p.m., whichever time is earlier, on Sunday, April 11.
Attendees can watch match play in a cordoned-off section of Salon Cassia or in Education and Business Complex, Room 1.224. UTB/TSC senior and Chess Team member Alfonso Almeida will give commentary on all matches as they are shown on a projection screen in the viewing room.
“It’s huge because we are bringing the people on the campus,” said Chess Program Director Russell Harwood. “The Education and Business Complex is a beautiful facility. Obviously, our campus is very pretty, and I think it just makes it even more special to have them here on campus.”
UTB/TSC finished third in its first “Final Four of College Chess” held at The University of Texas at Dallas in April 2009.
Admission is free. Attendees can park across from the Education and Business Complex on University Boulevard.
