UTB and TSC Chess Team Leaves Princeton with National Ranking of 5th Place University
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – DECEMBER 30, 2012 – The Chess Team of The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College has completed four days of competition at the 2012 Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship being hosted this year by Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey.
UTB and TSC was the 5th placed university out of the 30 universities represented at the competition. Out of 44 teams representing the 30 universities, the “A” Team finished in 6th place and the “B” Team placed 18th.
The awards ceremony took place from 3 to 4 p.m. after the sixth and final round was played today, Sunday, Dec. 30.
The UTB and TSC “A” Team defeated the UT Dallas “B” 3.5 to .5
Mauricio Flores, Max Cornejo and Katerina Nemcova won their games; Axel Bachmann drew his game.
“A” Team finishes with a total of 4 match points out of a possible 6.
The UTB and TSC “B” Team were defeated by UT Austin 2.5 to 1.5
Daniela De la Parra won her game; Aura Salazar drew her game; Jeffrey Serna and Luciana Morales lost their games.
“B” Team finishes with 3 points out of a possible 6.
Grandmaster Axel Bachmann won the prize for Top Board 2 with 5.5 game points out of a possible 6.
The two UTB and TSC teams that competed at the tournament were:
“A” Team consisting of: #1 Mauricio Flores, #2 Axel Bachmann, #3 Max Cornejo, and #4 Katerina Nemcova.
“B” Team consisting of: #1 Aura Salazar, #2 Luciana Morales, #3 Daniela De la Parra, #4 Jeffrey Serna, and Alternate Armando Cortez.
This tournament determined the collegiate championship for the Western Hemisphere. This was also the qualifying tournament for the 2013 President’s Cup, known as the Final Four of College Chess. The University of Texas at Dallas, Webster University, University of Maryland Baltimore County and University of Illinois qualified for the Final Four.
