Summer 2014

Dear Colleagues,

Stage two of the transition begins in earnest this summer with the naming of the Interim President for UTB, Dr. Bill Fannin. We are fortunate to have someone of his caliber join our work during this important time.

Below is a message from Dr. Fannin to the campus community. I look forward to welcoming him with all the respect and professionalism that has defined our campus culture.

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I was greatly honored to be asked by Chancellor Cigarroa to be the President, ad interim at the University of Texas at Brownsville. UT Brownsville is known for providing quality instruction in a supportive learning environment to the great benefit of students, many of whom are the first in their family to earn a college degree. It will be a privilege to work with each of you in the coming year in continuing UTB’s service to Texas and the region.

I have already talked with President Garcia, and we will be mapping out more detailed transition plans soon. As those plans are firmed up, they will be shared with the university community. Should you have questions, concerns, or ideas regarding the transition, please share them with your dean or director so that they might be addressed in the transition planning.

In his remarks Wednesday, the Chancellor presented a challenging agenda for us all in the coming year. We are, first, to ensure that every student at UT Brownsville receives a first-class education. UTB students have come to expect nothing less and they truly deserve the very best.

This next year will also be one of preparing for the new UT Rio Grande Valley. It will be exciting to work with the UTB campus community, President Bailey, and our UT System partners to bring the vision of UTRGV to reality. The future is bright for higher education in South Texas.

My wife, Valerie, and I want to thank all who have already reached out to welcome us to UT Brownsville. Over the years in the UT System we have made many friends in the Valley. We look forward to making new ones in the coming months. We are excited to be joining you in August. Until then we wish each of you a productive and enjoyable summer.

See you soon!
Bill Fannin
