The march toward merging UT Brownsville and UT Pan American with the RACH to form a new South Texas University in the Rio Grande Valley continues forward with great momentum. The first hearing for the merger bill is scheduled for this coming Wednesday at 2 pm before the House Higher Education Committee at the Texas state capitol. Chairman Dan Branch had promised that this would be the first bill that he would schedule for hearings in his committee and he has lived up to that promise. We have invited five students attending our Math and Science Academy to attend the historic hearing and represent our student body. Chancellor Cigarroa, President Nelsen and I will also be in attendance, prepared to testify.
The UT System South Texas Initiative has been embraced with bipartisan support by all of the Rio Grande Valley legislators, by Governor Perry, and by many other important community and legislative leaders. In addition, faculty and staff senates from both universities passed resolutions in support of the merger and have since been joined by many other communities and groups who have passed similar resolutions.
It certainly seems an idea whose time has finally come. Please keep up with the latest breaking news on the ongoing progress of the merger through the UT System website.
I thank you for your continuing support of our work.
