UTB/TSC Fast facts

  • Growing Faculty, Enrollment, Degrees

At the start of the partnership between The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, the institution had about 200 full-time faculty members. Today, the university claims more than 375. The student body has also grown from about 7,000 students in 1990 to more than 17,000. The university has added nearly 50 new associate, baccalaureate and master’s degree programs and, in 2007, accepted a cohort of students into its first doctoral program, a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Curriculum and Instruction with a Specialization in Bilingual Studies.

  • Growing Excellence in Research

Over the last 12 years, research expenditures have increased almost 10 fold to its current level of more than $6 million annually. Over the last two years, UTB/TSC has been ranked among the top five Texas universities for expenditures in fields such as aerospace technology and biomedical research. Among the centers for excellence in research at UTB/TSC include the Center for Biomedical Studies, the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy and the Rancho del Cielo Field Station in Mexico. The university is also participating in the Bahia Grande Project, one of the largest wetlands restoration projects in the United States.

  • Working with the Community

UTB/TSC created the state-of-the-art International Technology, Education and Commerce Center in a former shopping mall purchased in 2002. The recently renovated ITEC Center includes the university’s technical training programs, continuing education workshops, local industries, international banking and business services, the Brownsville Police Academy and a small business incubator that has already helped create more than 40 businesses and hundreds of jobs for the area. UTB/TSC also supports the Center for Civic Engagement, the Cross Border Institute for Regional Development and the Institute for Public Service.
