Congressional Internship Program Mission

The purpose of the Congressional Internship Program of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute is to expose young Latinos to the legislative process and to strengthen their professional and leadership skills, ultimately promoting the presence of Latinos on Capitol Hill.

Congressional Internship Program Description
The Congressional Internship Program provides college students with a paid Congressional work placement on Capitol Hill for a period of 12 weeks (spring or fall) or eight weeks (summer). This unmatched experience allows students to learn firsthand about our nation's legislative process. Promising Latino undergraduates from across the country are selected for this leadership training program.  Students gain work experience, participate in a community service project, and receive educational and professional programming provided by CHCI. This comprehensive three-prong approach provides extraordinary learning and networking opportunities for students.

HACU National Internship Program / Opening Doors of Opportunity

HNIP staff works with HSI's, federal agencies and corporations to recruit well-qualified and motivated students. Participating agencies and corporations hope to increase diversity in their work force by providing internship opportunities to high-achieving Hispanic students. This creates a pipeline of future employees who have had positive, meaningful work experience.

Selection and Placement

HACU reviews applications for completeness and eligibility. HACU staff matches academic backgrounds to internship descriptions provided by the host organizations. Representatives from the host organizations and HACU staff work to ensure that students’ skills and goals are considered in placement.

Agencies and corporations review applications and make the final selection. Supervisors are encouraged to interview applicants before making the final student selection. Students that are selected, will be contacted by HACU and offered the position. Interns work in the Washington, D.C., area and at field sites throughout the country. It is not possible for applicants to select which agencies or corporations for whom they will intern.
