UTB Chess "A" Team Qualifies for Final 4; "B" Team Finishes Strong

MILWAUKEE, WI, December 30, 2010

he UTB Chess "A" Team qualified for the "President's Cup: The Final 4 of College Chess" with a tie in its final  match Thursday in the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championships.

Out of the six matches played by all 28 teams in the tournament, UTB finished tied for second place with University of Maryland, Baltimore County with 4.5 points. The University of Texas at Dallas won the tournament with six points, winning all six of its matches.

UTB actually was awarded a third-place finish on tiebreakers.

UTB lost only to UTD Wednesday, then finished against UMBC in a 2.0-2.0 deadlock Thursday, guaranteeing both teams a spot in the Final 4.

UTD, UTB, UMBC and Texas Tech University will now advance to the "President's Cup: Final 4 of College Chess" April 2-3 in Washington, D.C.

Individually, Timur Gareyev was awarded Best #1 Board, and Max Cornejo was awarded Best #4 Board.

In Thursday's Round 6 match, the results were for UTB "A" team were as follows:

UTB "A" team (2612) vs. University of Maryland, Baltimore County (2247), draw 2.0-2.0

#1 Board: GM Timur Gareyev vs. Leonid Kritz, draw
#2 Board: GM Axel Bachmann vs. Sergey Erenburg, draw
#3 Board: GM Mauricio Flores vs. Gi Margvelashvili, draw 
#4 Board: IM Max Cornejo vs. Sasha Kaplan, draw

Meanwhile, the UTB "B" Team defeated The  University of Texas at Dallas "C" team, 4.0-0.0, to finish the tournament with 4.0 points. The total points placed UTB in a five-way for fourth place, but was ranked in eighth place on tiebreakers.
