UTB ties for 2nd place at Southwest Collegiate Championship 2013


Over the March 23-24 weekend, 17 members of The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) Chess Team competed at the 2013 Southwest Collegiate Chess Tournament. The tournament was sanctioned by the Texas Chess Association and held in conjunction with the Texas Scholastic Chess Championships. The collegiate tournament took place at the Renaissance Casa de Palmas Hotel, and the State Scholastics were held at the McAllen Convention Center. The Southwest Collegiate was open to current college and university students. A total of 30 students participated in the tournament, which included teams from UTB and TSC, Texas Tech University, The University of Texas at Dallas, and Texas A&M International University. The University of Texas Pan American was represented by one student, which does not constitute a team.

The UTB Chess Team tied for second place as a team with UT Dallas with 13.5 points. The top four individual scores were added to get the team score. Texas Tech University placed first with a total of 14.5 points. Texas Tech brought 3 Grandmasters to this event, while UTB and TSC and UT Dallas had one Grandmaster each. Texas A&M International University placed 4th as a team.

UTB Chess Team member Grandmaster Mauricio Flores placed 2nd individually with 4 out of a possible 5 points. He was undefeated, with 2 draws which came against higher-rated Texas Tech Grandmasters. UTB Chess Team members International Master Max Cornejo and Woman International Master Aura Salazar also finished in the top 10. Max finished in 7th place with 3.5 points, and Aura finished in 8th place with 3 points. Also representing UTB and TSC at this tournament were Oziel Juarez, Armando Cortez, Jose Vera, Woman International Master Daniela De la Parra, Colt Munoz, Woman International Master Luciana Morales, Jeffrey Serna, Everardo Guajardo, Joshua Neece, Mkhitar Hobosyan, Brandan Neece, Benjamin Rovelo, Alberto Gonzalez, and Dennis Ortiz.
