Tasks
The BIT will review situations involving a student who poses a potential risk of harm to self and/or other people or property in the university community in accordance with policies stated in the Student Code of Conduct

Consult with administration, faculty or staff and other students affected by the behaviors caused by the student

Coordinate the university response to a violent or threatening, or significantly distressed student.

Develop a specific strategy to address the treatening or disruptive, distressed, or dangerous behavior with regard to safety and rights of others and minimize the disruption to the university community

Make recommendations to university officials on appropriate action steps that rae consistent with university policies and the Student Code of Conduct, as well as federal, state and local laws
In the event of an emergency or situation that necessitates immediate intervention, please contact Campus Police. The BIT plays a secondary role to all urgent circumstances and should be contacted only after initail notifications are made.
Actions
When a student exhibits disruptive, distressed, or dangerous behavior that is detrimental to the student or other memebers of the University community, or the orderly conduct of the university, the University may take the necessary action to protect the student or other affected parties. The Behavior Intervention Team (BIT) (or in an emergency the Dean of Students) will determine such action, which may include, but is not limited to:

Follow up with student

Refer to the student to various programs or services on campus (including, but not limited to: Counseling Services and Student Judicial Affairs)

Notifying the parents or next-of-kin (regardless of the student's age) or initiating the action necessary to place the student in the custody of an institution capable of dealing with the student's needs and behavior

Recommend to the vice president for Student Affairs that a student be given the option of taking a leave of absence from the university
