For parents of an entering college freshman, it is beneficial to attend our Parent Orientation. These are offered during the summer before your student's first semester and are concurrent with the Scorpiontation Program. Family Orientation is only offered Day 1 of the Scorpiontation Program.
Family Orientation runs separately from the student program, and it focuses on a variety of topics of interest to parents of new students. These include housing, money management, academic requirements, health services, personal and property safety, student life, and family transition.
These presentations are given by faculty and staff, and also by current university students. Although parents may attend Orientation on the same date as their student, please remember that the parent and student programs are entirely separate.
You will get a chance to interact with faculty during workshops, and you will get the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Topics of discussion include:
During Family Orientation, you will be led on a tour of the campus. This is a good opportunity for you to become familiar with your student's learning and living environment for the next four or more years. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes and an umbrella in case of rain.
By attending parent orientation, you can expect to receive many benefits:
You can gain more knowledge of the school's academic and social aspects by meeting informally with administrators and faculty.
You can learn how to help your student adjust to college.
You will have the opportunity to learn more about your student's financial aid, housing, etc.
You can get a hands-on view of the residence hall in which your student might be living in.
You can develop a network of friends by interacting with other parents attending the program.
While parent attendance is not required, it would still be to your advantage to attend.
