Meningitis Policy

In accordance with Texas Education Code 51.9192, effective January 1, 2012, all new students and transfers to the University who are not over 30 years of age will be required to present a certificate evidencing that the student has been vaccinated against bacterial meningitis. This section also includes students who have had a break in enrollment of at least one fall or spring semester.

Students must supply one of the following before the first day of the semester:

  1. A certificate signed by a health practitioner or an official immunization record evidencing that the student has received a bacterial meningitis vaccination dose or booster during a five year period before the student enrolls (Note: the vaccination or booster must have been taken at least 10 days prior to the first day of the semester), or
  2. An affidavit from a health practitioner that states that the vaccination would be injurious to the health and well-being of the student, or
  3. A waiver for an exemption that can be located at : https://webds.dshs.state.tx.us/immco/affidavit.shtm .  Students or the parent/guardian may apply for this option, but please note that it takes at least 30 days to process, so applicants will have to prepare in advance.  Proof of having applied for an exemption will not be considered a replacement for the waiver.
