How to Integrate Service-Learning in Your Course: 12:30 -3:30 pm
Featured Speaker: Isabel Baca
, Ph.D., Rhetoric and Writing Studies Program
Department of English, University of Texas at El Paso.
Introduction to Service-Learning:
This will include defining service-learning and providing an overview of the benefits of this teaching and learning method. Dr. Baca will demonstrate how service-learning can be integrated across the disciplines and how service-learning allows for more writing opportunities in the classroom. She will provide specific examples, address possible drawbacks and explain how these can be resolved, and show examples of the necessary paperwork/assignments: agency profile forms, student contracts/service-learning agreements, reflection assignments, and evaluation forms.
How to Integrate Service-Learning in Your Course:
For this section of the workshop, faculty will be asked to bring one of their course syllabi. After completing the "finding the best fit for service-learning" exercise, an activity that will help faculty identify the right nonprofit organization for their course, faculty will work in small groups and brainstorm on how to integrate service-learning in their particular course, examining their course objectives and considering the different missions and objectives of a variety of nonprofit organizations. If time permits, different faculty will share with the whole group how they would integrate service-learning in their course and how they would integrate writing as well.
