Workshop I:
Departmental Assessment for Majors, Graduate Students, and Core: Time-Efficient, Useful, and Acceptable to SACS
Monday, Jan 7, 2013, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.  UBCB 2.112, Breakfast and lunch will be provided

The workshop will help departmental teams to review and revise their current assessment practices, making them as time-efficient and as useful to faculty and to student learning as possible.  Participants are invited to bring any current materials on their learning goals or assessment practices.  By the end of the workshop, it will be possible to make significant progress in developing an assessment plan that is sustainable, sensible, and practical.  Topics will include:  Why do we have to do this?  How can we do it with the least possible investment of time?  Do learning goals have to be measurable?  What does that mean? What about the learning we value like creativity or global perspective? What kinds of evidence are needed?  Do we have to use standardized tests?  Does assessment violate student privacy or academic freedom? How can we act on the assessment information we gather?  Will anyone ever read our reports?  Will assessment be used to cut programs? And more…bring your questions!

Workshop II:
Developing Courses for Core
Tuesday, Jan 8, 2013, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. UBCB 2.112

The workshop will help faculty develop courses for the new general core.  Topics will include: How can a course meet the new requirements?    How can we cover the content of the course, while doing all these other things?  What about the workload and the paper load? What are the best ways to assess student learning in the course?  What kinds of assignments are appropriate?  How can we establish standards and criteria for grading and assessment?  How can we help multi-lingual students?  How should we deal with students who do not have the basic prerequisite skills?  What are the best ways of responding to student work?  How can we improve student learning within the constraints of our reasonable time and energy?
