Testing Requirements

What do your Test Scores mean?

Academic advisors can assist with interpreting test scores and proper course placement. The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requires that every student in Texas take a placement test before entering college. These are some of the tests acceptable for meeting the requirements: THEA, COMPASS, ASSET w/ writing, Accuplacer and other alternative tests offered at other universities throughout the state of Texas. Based on the test results, academic advisors determine proper course placement.

** Students who score less than the minimum placement scores for reading and writing on any TSI examination will have a block placed on their registration and will be referred to the Language Institute for further evaluation and assistance. Additional testing using COMPASS may result in placement in the ESOL program. If students are determined to be fluent in English, the student will be referred to the Academic Advising Center so that they can enroll in Writing Skills I (ENGL-0320) or College Reading I (READ-0320). Students may also be referred to Career Counseling to discuss career options and possible enrollment in a certificate program or to Disabilitiy Services for information about services, testing and possible accomodations.
