HPRS 1101 Introduction to Health Professions

COURSE DESCRIPTION: An overview of the roles of the various members of the health care system, educational requirements, and issues affecting the delivery of health care. (WECM — "Workforce Education Course Manual")

The course focuses on health careers exploration, leadership development, ethical and legal responsibilities, the history of health care and economics of health care. Students will develop a concept of health and wellness from the perspective of a health consumer as well as a potential health professional. HPRS 1106 Medical Terminology

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A study of word origin and structure through the introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviations and symbols, surgical procedures, medical specialties, and diagnostic procedures. (WECM — "Workforce Education Course Manual")

This courses focuses in the development of a working knowledge of the language of medicine. A study of correct spelling and the use of medical terminology to communicate in the basic health profession courses.(UTB/TSC)

HPRS 1204 Basic Health Professions Skills

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A study of the concepts that serve as the foundation for health profession courses.  Topics include client handling and safety issues, basic client monitoring, and health documentation methods. (WECM — "Workforce Education Course Manual")

This course is designed to provide for the development of multi-occupational knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers.  Students gain basic health care knowledge and develop clinical skills necessary for employment in the health care industry.(UTB/TSC)

HPRS 1205 Medical Law and Ethics for Medical Careers

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to the relationship between legal aspects and ethics associated with the health care field. Emphasis on the ethical and legal responsibilities of health care professionals.(WECM — "Workforce Education Course Manual")

This course is designed to assist the student to understand why a knowledge of law and ethics is important to health care practitioners.  Students will recognize the importance of professional codes of ethics and explain how moral values relate to law, ethics, and etiquette.(UTB/TSC)

HPRS 2300 Pharmacology For Health Professions

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A study of drug classifications, actions, therapeutic uses, adverse effects, methods of administration, client education, and calculation of dosages.(WECM — "Workforce Education Course Manual")

The course provides a foundation for the study of pharmacology. Important drug information is provided, including generic and trade names, adverse reactions, and dose ranges. Drugs are classified by body system and drug function which will facilitate easy access to challenging content. In addition, this course covers general principles of pharmacology, the administration of drugs, a review of arithmetic and calculation of drug dosages, and general areas to consider when educating the patient and family.(UTB/TSC)
