Goal

To enhance research infrastructure and capabilities by establishing a state-of-the art imaging shared facility that strengthens the basic research and technological environment.

Objectives

  1. Improve the technology infrastructure for the imaging core facility
  2. Strengthen overall research capabilities and training of scientist engaged in high-quality biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and health disparities research at the university
  3. Improve competiveness and productivity of faculty for additional grant funding through the development of productive and cutting-edge research programs and collaborations
  4. Increase student access and provide an enriched scientific environment and infrastructure for learning and research experience of students pursuing a research path

Core News

A new microscope equipped with an Electron-Multiplying CCD camera was acquired and is now available at the Bioimaging Core Facility for experiments involving advanced fluorescent imaging. The microscope will be upgraded in year three of the grant, 2011, to a motorized Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope.

A new course, Advanced Bioimaging and Microscope (BIOL 4370), was developed and is now available for students and junior faculty. The course was first offered in summer 2010 with an enrollment of 25 undergraduate and five graduate students, and it was taught by Emilio R. Garrido Sanabria, M.D., PhD. Special topic lectures at the course were presented by invited scientists and microscopy experts.
