June, 2004 E-Newsletter

Dear Community Member,

The Center has completed a very successful 2003-2004 year with over 400 students involved in service learning projects and programs around our community.  Click Here to download a RealPlayer music video of some of the highlights of the past year (large file - 18 megabytes).

Faculty from the Schools of Education, Health, Business, Engineering and Liberal Arts led these students: Professors Chuey Abrego, Michelle Abrego, Mike Boster, Kathy Bussert-Webb, Bea Castillo, Mary Curtis, Sonia Cunningham, Anthony Daboub, Lidia Diaz, Betsy Freeth, Veronica Galvan-Carlan, Carlos Gomez, Irma Jones, Bill Harris, Marvin Lovett, Manuel Medrano, Bobbette Morgan, Paula Parson, Michael Quantz, Ann Rentfro, John Robey, Renee Rubin, James Storbeck, John Sutterby, James Telese, Suzanne Urbis, Elizabeth Vidaurri and Lucy Willis.   Click here for a complete Report to the Community.

During the summer, we are planning continuous outreach to the community in collaboration with the Good Neighbor Settlement House, The Brownsville Boys and Girls Club, the Brownsville Housing Authority and various other community agencies.  The UTB/TSC Community Outreach Counseling Clinic, under the direction of Dr. Selma Yznaga is conducting weekly "Road to Self Esteem" seminars for the Buena Vida mothers and daughters.  Click here for the summer "Road to Self-Esteem" calendar.

And good news!  Dr. Debbie Huerta, Director of the UTB/TSC Counseling and Career Services department, has informed us that her department wants to “adopt” the Buena Vida barrio and integrate weekly activities into the department's work week.  Beginning June 2004, her staff will be scheduling volunteer work in the community during the week.  This is an exciting new model that hopefully will be followed in other departments on campus.

The Center is already planning new service learning activities for the 2004-2005 academic year. With your help, next year will be even better!

 ¡A toda marcha!
