The Buena Vida Wellness Clinic is starting this week!
Dr. Selma D. Yznaga has recruited other certified counselors as 
well as graduate students to volunteer one night a week to help Buena Vida families. In addition, the Wellness clinic will be offering nutritional counseling and screenings for diabetes and high blood pressure as well as family counseling and parenting classes. “This is really good,” said Maria Calderon, a Buena Vida resident and mother of three children. “Even if these are basic services, it would help to prevent illnesses that sometimes get worse because of a lack of early treatment.”
The Buena Vida Business Association
UTB/TSC School of Business faculty and MBA students are now meeting every week with a
growing cohort of Buena 
Vida business owners. MBA students from Dr. James Storbeck and Dr. Anthony Daboub's classes are surveying Buena Vida businesses to assess needs. The Center is delivering small business workshops and leadership seminars in the areas of customer service, profit maximization. Dr. Marvin Lovett recently delivered a marketing principles seminar to the Buena Vida businesses.
Reading and Writing Improvement Program at Buena Vida Learning Center.
Two UTB/TSC classes taught by Dr. Paula Parson are being held at the Buena Vida Learning Center. The last hour of class, university students have an opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom with children who live in that community. On Mondays university interns assess and plan reading intervention activities for the children. On Wednesdays university students work with children who are transported from the Citrus Gardens community for help in developing their reading and writing skills.
Port of Brownsville Internships
Community-based learning with UTB/TSC engineering students at Port of Brownsville supervised by Port Engineer Hector Lopez. This fall, 2003, 3 students in Prof. Mike Boster's Industrial Technology CAD class entered into a 'pilot' internship program with the Port, assisting Port engineers in various surveying and CAD projects.
The mission of the UTB/TSC Center for Civic Engagement is to help empower and raise the quality of life for allresidents of our community beginning with the Buena Vida-Downtown Neighborhood. The CCE is partnering with the City, community agencies, local businesses and volunteers to provide:(1) community-based learning for UTB/TSC students, (2) leadership, civic responsibility & family business development and (3) the greening of homes, neighborhoods and parks. The CCE's main offices will be located at the Cueto Building, located at 13th and Madison.
