Kids Voting USA-Brownsville (KVUSA-B) is an officially recognized partnership between the University of Texas at Brownsville’s (UTB) Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) and all of the schools of Brownsville: public, private and home schools. The collaboration is the only one of its kind in the United States. KVUSA-B engages students and families in voting and other civic activities. Rock the Vote – Teacher Trainings
On July 24th and 25th, September 8th, and October 4th this year, over 200 educators attended the third annual teachers’ workshops hosted by Kids Voting USA – Brownsville, the Brownsville Independent School (BISD), and the Brownsville Association of Non-public Schools Academics (BANSA). The workshops introduced the great resources Kids Voting USA has to offer, provided teachers with materials to assist in promoting KVUSA-B, and offered instruction on the use of the online voting system, DoubleClick Democracy.

Student Development
On September 15, 2012, High School Student Council members and their advisors attended the UTB and TSC Student Organization Leadership Development training hosted by the Office of Student Life. The training covered topics such as Parliamentary Procedures, Conflict Resolution, Team Building, etc.

Voter Registration and Mock Polling Place
The week of September 24th, KVUSA-B visited high school campuses and registered eligible students to vote in the November 2012 elections. With the guidance of the Cameron County Elections Office, KVUSA-B hosted a mock polling place that gave students the opportunity to get a hands-on approach to voting.

 

 

 

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) REVISED
On Tuesday, October 2nd, the BISD Board of Trustees, UTB Administrators, and the CCE Director signed a revised MOU solidifying their commitment to Kids Voting USA-Brownsville.

Voter Registration Simulation
From October 1-9, 2012 campuses were encouraged to conduct a voter registration simulation and teach students the importance of registering to vote in accordance to voter registration deadlines. Educators could opt to print out voter registration cards or have their students complete the form electronically.

Student Voter Guide
Voter education is key to responsible citizenship. With the valuable contribution of many of the candidates running for office, KVUSA-B was able to construct a voter guide for all Brownsville students. Campuses began sharing the electronic voter guide on October 15, 2012 so that students could be prepared to vote beginning October 22.

Elections!
It’s that time again! Elections are open to all children, K-12, in Brownsville schools. With over 45,000 eligible voters, campuses strive to have the highest voter turnout.
