BIOGRAPHY:

Ruth Ann Ragland is a professor in the Government Department. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of North Texas, an M.A. in Public Administration from the University of New Mexico, and a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Arkansas. Her research interests are in state and local government, judicial politics, public opinion, and media and non-media variables in local elections.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:

Dr. Ragland has served as Associate Provost for Community Outreach and Special Projects, Associate Provost, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at UT Brownsville. She previously was at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, where she was an Associate Professor and Director of the Mass Communication Program, and at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, serving as Student Media Advisor/Manager.

She began teaching journalism at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque after experience in the news business. She was a broadcast editor and newswoman for The Associated Press in Little Rock, Arkansas; Dallas, Texas; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Columbus, Ohio. She also was a reporter for the Dallas Times-Herald and the Springdale, Arkansas, News.​​​​​​
